Bayport Bluepoint Library

2021, Quarter 4

Bayport Blue Point public library’s new location at 186 Middle Road in Blue Point has been under a complete renovation at the hands of RENU Contracting Restoration and Park East Construction since June 2020 and the project is finally coming to an end this month. This library is not a traditional public library. Being a newly restored building every detail was considered from floorplan to special interest spaces, new safety measures, advanced technology, delicious food, and so much more making this space a great new asset to the community. It begins the welcoming appearance of a new exterior for visitors. The parking lot and walkways were paved with Permeable Paving Systems which enables hydrologic function by infiltrating rainfall and contributing stormwater runoff while also supporting vehicle and pedestrian traffic with a new front entranceway with a handy cap accessible ramp.

The 40,000 sq ft. building sits on just over 8 acres of property with a Nature Center Discovery area. Walking into the library visitors are greeted by the smell of coffee and freshly made scones located right in the lobby cafe.

The cafe has an espresso machine and a commercial convection oven that is used daily for fresh pastries.

Off of the cafe to the northeast side, there is a meeting space with a gas fireplace and commercial kitchen which will be used for private discussions, events, yoga and can be divided with the partition walls if needed.
Southeast of the building is an adult stack room where you can find shelves filled with books and motion-activating lights as well as Quiet Rooms in the mezzanine overlooking the library with computer access and comfortable furnishings.

The children’s area on the west side of the building has plenty to keep them entertained. From the dry erase wall and books galore to a mini-kitchen and electric fireplace.

Young adults can find books for each age group along with TV’s, high-top tables with built-in charging stations.

The second floor has a great use of space for popular hobbies or interests. Places like a podcast or music room with soundproof flooring and walls. Another area called the science room has a laser printer. There is also a historic room with artifacts to be seen and learned about.

This library is high-tech and safe. A new BMS or Building Management System allows library staff to operate electric, heating, and monitor the building remotely at all times. A wireless access lock system grants access to different rooms throughout the library without staff having to leave their workspace. WIFI is available throughout the building and this library is one of the first local libraries to offer after-hours outside book pickup.

RENU’s team has been part of this project from the start, keeping the project on schedule to offer unique spaces to the community with appeal to all ages and interests. The Library Director, Mike Firestone said “It is great to restore a historical building into a community-building that continues to service the public.”
